What to Know When Breastfeeding and Working

Breastfeeding can be a rewarding experience for working mothers and offers many benefits for both mother and baby. However nursing and returning to work can be a challenging task for new moms. Being well informed and getting the proper support will help you succeed. Surround yourself with friends, family and health care providers who are knowledgeable and supportive of breastfeeding. To learn more, please contact the pediatric office of Dr. Douglass Hasell, Dr. Thuy Pham and Dr. Sheridan Hernandez of the Pediatric Specialists Medical Group in New Port Richey, FL. Dr. Pham is also an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant).

What are some of the key ingredients to successful working and breastfeeding?

1. Establish an abundant milk supply early on. That means you should put your baby to breast right after birth with a correct latch, nurse frequently and avoid supplementing if possible. Get help early if you encounter difficulties.
2. Invest in a quality breast pump, such as a double electric breast pump or double hands free, wireless pumps. (You will save money on formula if you can pump enough to meet your baby’s demand). Most insurances will cover the costs of a basic double electric pump with a prescription from you doctor.
3. Become an expert at hand expressing and pumping. Start pumping at least 2 weeks prior to returning to work. Your legal right to pump at work until your baby turns one is protected by the Affordable Care Act.
4. Make plans early on with your child care provider. Have an ample amount of stored breast milk to meet your baby’s needs.
5. Be prepared to nurse more frequently when you are at home and during the night. Remember the more you nurse, the less you have to pump.
6. Involve your partner, family and friends. Join breastfeeding support group in the communities or on line.
7. Nurture yourself. You may have to cut back other activities and take naps so you can make up for your lack of sleep.
